KAT'S OOMPH

From Boom, the movie in which she is skimpily clad, to Sheila Ki Jawani – the item number in which the actress without baring it all has oozed out that oomph, KATRINA KAIF has surely come a long way. She is sultry yet sweet; intense yet fun-loving.
SHILPI SHUKLA ALEXANDER gets talking with one of the leading actresses of Bollywood…

Director Farah Khan did keep her promise of giving you the best item number of the year.
Yes she did. With so many fan mails an calls, Sheila Ki Jawani’s success did make me feel like a celebrated artist. Although a major credit goes to Farah as I just almost blindly followed her instructions.

You are rated as the hottest actress of Bollywood today.
This is for the audience to decide. But I don’t find myself hot or sexy.

Do you think you are lucky to have made it so big in Bollywood?Surely. Not only do I get the best of films, they also turn out to be box office hits. This surely pleases and amazes me. However, I do wish that I was as lucky with bagging awards as well.

Year 2010 has been really good for you.
With hits like Rajneeti and Sheila Ki Jawani, I seriously couldn’t have asked for more. While Rajneeti established me as a serious actor, this item number well showcased my dancing skills.

Given the fact that Farah is known for yelling at her crew and actors on the sets, how scary was it for you to work with her in the film?
Oh! I used to enter the sets with my hands trembling. I was so afraid of her initially. But thankfully she never yelled at me. She was either being too sweet to me or my wok did please her.

What qualities should an actress have to stand a chance in Bollywood? To each his own. In my opinion, other than having loads of acting talent, one does have to have his or her own appeal. You must have something special that sets you apart from the crowd. It could be one’s oomph factor, beauty, grace, intelligence, ethnic looks, expressiveness, chirpiness or anything else. Every actress has her own plus point that draws the audience.

Did you always want to become an actor?
I always dreamt of becoming an actress. Acting was my biggest passion. But I never wanted to pick just any role in haste to make a place for myself here. With time, right opportunities came my way which I took no time in availing.

What would you be if not a model?
A model.

What kind of movies do you particularly love working on?
While I am open to doing different roles and prove my acting skills in all genres, I particularly love working on romantic comedies. This is one genre I directly relate to. I am eager to work on something like When Harry Met Sally.

Which actors are you keen on sharing screen space with?
I would love to work with Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. All I am awaiting is a call from a director for one such film.

Actresses are known to never be friends with one another. Have your say.
See. To be social or not is a personal choice, not professional. But if you are talking about professional rivalry, I must say that all of us excel in different genres. While Vidya Balan is known for her ethnic roles, I am good at playing fun roles. It is likewise with all other actresses in the film industry. So where’s the comparison?

What’s your beauty secret?
(Laughs) Onscreen, it is the camera, lighting and the makeup. And offscreen, it’s good food, exercise and mood. I largely credit inner peace and happiness for one’s good looks. So be happy if you don't want wrinkles on your face.

Do you have plans to enter Hollywood?
No Hollywood for me. I am quite happy with where I am at the moment. I might consider a few meaty roles in regional films though.

Which projects do you have in your kitty at the moment?
I have Zara Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara that stars Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol and Farhan Akhtar. Then there is Mere Brother Ki Dulhan opposite Imran Khan.  Next is Dostana 2 opposite Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham.

Is it true that you are soon planning to settle down with Ranbir Kapoor?
I prefer keeping my personal life to myself.

From Athithi Tum Kab Jaoge to Toonpur Ka Superhero, Ajay Devgn was one busy bee in 2010 with seven releases, of which six which were declared blockbuster hits. With six successful films in your kitty, you are indeed the undisputed hero of Bollywood 2010. Congrats!(Smiles) Thanks.
You are known as an actor who can deliver many films in a row.
I know. But now I want to cut down on films. However, as of now I am not being able to do that. But in a year or so you will see a sharp decline in the number of projects I sign.
How do you play a variety of roles…all with such precision?
That’s the essence of acting for me. I try to diverge from the norm and do unique and different films. And hope they get appreciated.

KANGANA'S CURLED UP SUCCESS

By Shilpi Shukla Alexander

With a blockbuster hits like Tanu Weds Manu and Once Upon A Time In Mumbai behind her, Kangana Ranaut sure has a long way to go. She currently has as many as 10 movies in the pipeline . The sexy damsel went candid during a recent dialogue. Read on...

How was it working with Madhavan in Tanu Weds Manu?
Madhavan is a fine actor and a fun person to be with. It was great sharing screen space with him.

From dark and intense roles, you have now switched over to comedy and thriller. Any reason?
I had been getting many requests from fans to do some comic and action-packed roles. hence, the latest choice of movies that I have signed.

Though both you and Emran are in the movie, you two are not paired opposite each other in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai
Yes. But that’s the director’s call. Our director Milan Luthria wanted me to couple with Ajay Devgan. I personally feel that Emran’s my lucky charm.

How was it working with Ajay Devgan?
Ajay is a pretty chilled out person, unlike what it seems onscreen. He is a pleasure to work with.

You have as many as 10 films under different stages of production!
Yes. I hadn’t planned it this way, though. Good offers came in, I kept signing them and worked continuously. And now everything is coming one after another.

So, when do we get to see you next this year?
Very soon indeed! At least three of my films – Game, Double Damaal and Rascals will hit theatres very soon.

THE LOST INDIAN ART OF DESIRE

By Shilpi Shukla Alexander

Is modern Indian sexual vitality going dead?

In the present-day Indian context, the term “sensual” is generally used to either portray someone as beautiful or label someone as sexy. As the new Indian woman strives to zero-size figures and turns to botox, the glorious legacy of Khajuraho, Konark, Ajanta-Ellora, Kamasutra, and Tantric sex is fast getting dumped in the trash heap.

India has played a prominent role in the history of sex, from the first literature to treat sexual intercourse as a science to building arousing art forms. In the words of celebrated writer Khushwant Singh: “Our forefathers understood sex as the most potent emotion in life and gave it the importance it deserved in their writings, paintings and sculpture. It was a time when sculptors were decorating walls of temples in Khajuraho and Konark, depicting lusty men and beautifully rounded young women copulating with gay abandon. Censorship by the state or society did not exist.”

Ancient India pioneered the use of sex education through art and literature. “Sex was considered as a natural and important aspect of life. Our ancient caves which depict graphic sex or the all-time classic on ways to enjoy sex were meant to excite and educate people, leaving rest to the imagination of individuals,” says Vinod Mirani, a senior film trade analyst. Imagination, cultural critics say, was the key to pure erotica. Padma Shree Bharatnatyam dancer Geeta Chandran says, “Today, classical dance is probably the last bastion of eroticism in India. That is because dance still celebrates the understated — the coy, the languorous.”

DYING MELODIES

By Shilpi Shukla Alexander

There’s a clear divide in the Indian music world between film and non-film music. With their huge budget, films are growing ever bigger. The blend of pop, rap and Sufi music in Indian film songs has doomed the independent music genre.

Alisha Chenoy had young India crooning “Made in India.” Shaan’s “Tanha Dil,” Abhijeet’s “Deewana” and Sonu Nigam’s “Tuuuu” made them the voice of the new generation. Daler Mehndi’s “Bolo Ta Ra Ra” made him the unrivalled Bhangra King; Colonial Cousins brought in western fusion to classical ragas; Bombay Vikings’ “Wo Chali” introduced a genre of English fusion to old Bollywood tracks; Remo Fernandes “O Meri Munni” and Baba Sehgal’s “Thanda Thanda Paani” had us jiving to Hindi rap, Sunita Rao came up with the mesmerizing “Pari Hoon Main”; Ila Arun’s “Maaro Ghaghro” and Shubha Mudgal’s “Ab Ke Saawan” made us fall in love with rustic melodies. Adnan Sami and Asha Bhosle’s “Kabhi Toh Nazar Milao” and Alka Yagnik’s “Saare Sapne” symphonies touched virtually every Indian heart. The 1990s saw many independent musicians rise to fame with chartbuster albums. Non-film music was a rage.

Today, however, this music culture is in its death throes.

SPLASHING OUT ON BEAUTY

By Shilpi Shukla Alexander

Ever wondered how all Bollywood actresses manage to look hotter and more appealing with every successive movie? We’re sure you do. The mantra for these Hot Divas of Bollywood is that a perfect look can be gotten, if you haven’t got it!
From head to toe our Bollywood actresses are kept under microscope and probably that is what makes them crave for that ‘ideal body’ with ‘just right features’!
In earlier days, actresses shied away from talking about their ‘artificial enhancements’ but today it has become a fad more than anything else!
Let’s have a dekko at the much-in-vogue trend…

Shilpa Shetty:

By now everyone knows that Shilpa has had her nose job done. We must say, this leggy beauty looks far better today! But the actress believes that it was a horrible job that went wrong. “I wish I hadn’t gone for a nose job. Little did I know about the consequences then,” says the Big Brother winner. Well ma’am, we beg to differ. Check yourself in Baazigar and now..
Don’t you look much better and much more desirable now? Ask your fans for clearing doubts, if any. What’s more, off late, she has also undergone liposuction too.

Bipasha Basu:

The latest in the lot, Bipasha too went for silicone implants when she decided to enter Bollywood after bidding good-bye to the modelling world. A voluptuous Bipasha in Jism surprised all. However, the actress owed her sex appeal to her ‘excess weight’! This Bengali dusky beauty has had silicon implants as well as liposuction done on her belly and thighs. Watched Bips in that sexy beach wear in Dhoom II? When the actress was sued by a cosmetologist for not paying him his money for the surgery she had undergone, most people were not surprised!

What most people did not know was that Bips who was operated at Lilavati Hospital suddenly developed back pain post the surgery. Apparently her back could not bear the burden of the excessive silicon implants. Well, they must have weighed a bomb, Bips.

Kareena Kapoor:

Bebo’s size-zero figure makes many go berserk. She looks dazzling and her weight loss is responsible for it no doubt. However, grapevine has it that Kareena has to gone under the knife to get her chiselled jaw line!

Another lesser known fact of this sexy actress is that she has also had cellulite removed from her buttocks. The famous backside had to be cut into shape to give the perfect ‘backside’ view. Besides, she also had her teeth aligned.

Sushmita Sen:

This sari-clad Ms Gorgeous of Main Hoon Na was probably the first actor to admit that she had gone for silicon implants to enhance her breasts. This former Miss Universe in her trademark feisty style defended her move by saying that she was proud of what she had done since it wasn’t a crime to enhance one’s beauty! “I have a right to look the way I want to. Enhancing one’s beauty is no felony for sure,” says the sultry actress, “And I don’t need to hide this fact either.”

Preity Zinta:

Preity’s changed look has taken her fans and admirers by surprise! The chubby and chunky, cute girl of Kya Kehna and Dil Se looked extremely transformed  in Kabhie Alvida Na Kehnaa with her high eyebrows, puffy eyes and extra pouty lips! The actress looked gorgeous no doubt but her undergoing liposuction and face-lift news spread like wild fire! When asked about the same Preity replied, “To each his own! I don’t see anything wrong with people who go for cosmetology to look better.”
Not many are aware that this highly structured face work done left marks on her face gripping her to put on intense make-up in KANK.
The laughter lines were surgically removed post the shooting of Salaam Namaste. The bubbly actress had to stay away from all promotion as her face could not be exposed to harsh lights. So, if you recall, only Saif gave interviews for the promotional campaign.

Koena Mitra:

A minor corrective surgery, meant to sharpen an already pert nose that won Koena Mitra the Supermodel contest, went horribly wrong! The stunning actor who looked good before the surgery looked terrible post it! This is what the actress has to say post surgery — “Plastic surgery is the worst kept secret of any film industry – Bollywood, Hollywood, you name it. But it’s a huge gamble. Parents go to doctors with their 16-year-olds and say, “She wants to become a model or an actress, but she has some baby fat, can we do this surgery to make her look perfect?” Yes, it’s been successfully before. But it’s also scary, ask me!”

Sherlyn Chopra:

Starlet Sherlyn Chopra has openly confessed that she has gone for a butt surgery to enhance her butt! May be Jennifer Lopez was an inspiration!
Post the surgery, the sexy wannabe is posing in all photographs with her ass on your face look rather than showing us her face. She has reasons to do so…

Esha Deol:

Hema Malini’s daughter Esha unfortunately wasn’t as blessed with beauty as her mom. Instead, she got the masculine appeal like that of her father Dharmendra. She had no other option but to get her square jawline and slumped lips rectified. In recent times, she also had her upper lip improved as she felt her thin lips skint her looks. This was done when she enrolled for a dance course in the US where she got her lips corrected by a cosmetologist. Of late, she has really started looking quite hot and… so feminine. Watch Cash and Darling

Rakhi Sawant:

Now this actress really wanted her assets to talk for themselves. Since she did not have them, she danced at various doctor conventions and ensured that she got her silicon implants. After jiggling at various item songs, Rakhi probably got tired of them.
The candid item girl (who’s now dreaming to enter th world of acting as a lead heroine soon) confessed on national television that she has undergone breast augmentation, botox to remove frown lines and collagen infections to improve her looks. Ranting about her new looks, she said, “Jo bhagwan nahin deta hai, wo doctor deta hai (doctor gives what God doesn’t give). Last we heard her saying, all things come in small sizes and she has had the implants removed.

Sridevi:

Sridevi (in her earlier days) apparently wasn’t happy with her nose and went under the knife to get it in shape. The superstar never admitted her move but her change in appearance made it inevitable for her fans to know the truth. Watch her childhood movies and then her later movies like Sadma and you could well notice the difference. We know that as we grow, a de-shaped nose, doesn’t turn pert. In her case, just within 3-4 years!!

Juhi Chawla:
She had a face that won her the Miss India crown, but Juhi was not happy with her button nose. The actress went under the scalpel and till date says that it was her worst nightmare. The nose, according to her, looks like a corkscrew now. “I should not have played with my natural looks. I wish I hadn’t,” she sighs. Well, the result of the surgery was not that bad either, Juhi. Check out Koena, if you must.
